Charges Pending For Tazewell County Man For Bomb-Making Material & Narcotics

TAZEWELL COUNTY, VA (WOAY) – On the morning of March 3rd, 2017 deputies were called to respond to an address in the Tannersville area of Tazewell County regarding a Mr. Louis MacDowell and some erratic behavior he was exhibiting. Upon arrival, deputies were able to determine that Mr. MacDowell may be suffering from some sort of altered mental status. Deputies were able to take Mr. MacDowell into custody for safety reasons and for his health. Upon taking him into custody deputies found possible narcotics in his possession. He was then evaluated by health officials and placed in a facility outside of the area for his safety. Deputies also obtained a search warrant for his residence to search for additional narcotics. Prior to their arrival information was obtained that there may be explosives inside the residence.

The Virginia State Police (VSP) Bomb Squad and members of the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) and Virginia State Police Tactical teams were dispatched to the home. Members of the TCSO Criminal Investigation Division along with the Bomb Squad conducted a search of the residence and found articles related to use and possession of narcotics as well as numerous firearms, ammunition, and evidence of bomb-making materials. The Bomb Squad safely detonated some devices on scene and recovered evidence that Mr. MacDowell was manufacturing explosive devices.

Currently, Mr. MacDowell is receiving health-related services and there are charges pending upon his return to Tazewell County. This is an active investigation and no further information can be released at this time.
