Summer baseball league enters home stretch

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – After nearly two months, the Upper Deck summer league for high school baseball players has reached the final week of the regular season, with the playoffs and championship scheduled for this weekend.

Teams from Independence and Liberty won their respective games at Epling Stadium Wednesday, with Liberty coming from behind to win 5-3 against players from Greenbrier West. Isaac Atkins, who will be a senior for the Raiders in the 2020-21 school year, made a big impact both on the mound and at the plate in his game.

In additional high school sports news, Gov. Jim Justice has proposed a color-coded system for fall sports, similar to the system proposed for when schools in general open for the new year. Currently, all high school fall sports teams would begin preseason practices August 17.
