Suicide is one of the leading deaths in the U.S., don’t be afraid to ask for help

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – According to the CDC each year nearly 45,000 Americans die by suicide.

In 2016 West Virginia ranked number 11 in the states with the highest suicide rates. That same year the CDC reported one person died by suicide each hour.

A recovery specialist told Newswatch, that the best way families can help a loved one who they believe is contemplating suicide is by simply asking.

FMRS Regional Youth Recovery Specialist, Hannah Barker said, “You’re not going to make them attempt suicide by simply asking. Say hey I’m worried about you. Are you thinking about attempting suicide? Because if you at least ask then you at least get the issue on the table and if they’re not planning to at least you know.”
