WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): We are starting the day with some patchy fog, which will clear up to reveal mostly sunny skies for the longest day of the year. Temperatures will stay manageable today, but will start warming up through the weekend into next week. Make sure to have plenty of water, sunscreen, and shade as you enjoy the nice weather ahead. Meteorologist Christian Boteler has the details:
The weekend will continue the nice weather with sunny skies and rapidly warming temperatures. Saturday will be manageable, but Sunday will be the start of the very hot and humid weather as we reach the 90s and stay there for most of the next week. The apex of the heat will be on Tuesday, where the projected high temperature is 94 degrees. We could see some record breaking temperatures, as 90 degrees is the record in Beckley for any June 24th. Heat indexes could reach over 100 degrees in some areas, leading to some major heat concerns across the region. The heat will be more intense across parts of the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic coast. Here’s Tuesday’s Heat Risk Outlook:
Here’s a quick explanation of the Heat Risk Outlook. The orange signifies a moderate risk, meaning those sensitive to heat will be impacted and should stay indoors or limit their time in the sun. This the ranking most of our area is placed under for Tuesday. Make sure to stay cool and hydrated through the day.
The red denotes major heat risks, which will impact most people, especially without adequate cooling and hydration. Some parts of our area, mainly the Greenbrier Valley, are within this category. Make sure to have fans, water, and sunscreen to use through the warmest days.
The purple shade is extreme risk, meaning impacts are likely across heat-sensitive industries and all people without effective cooling systems and/or proper hydration will be impacted. While none of our area is within the extreme risk, much of the eastern part of the country will be impacted by scorching heat.
This heat and humidity will last through the weekend into next week with little to no relief incoming. Tuesday does have a very slight chance of a pop-up shower overnight, but disagreement between sources indicates low confidence in any rain then. The next chance of rain will be on Thursday of next week, but we stay in the 90s as little relief from the heat is offered towards the end of the month. Here’s your 7-Day Forecast:
