Snow, Poor Travel Conditions and Fresh Arctic Blast On The Way

WOAY-TV (Oak Hill, WV): After a reprieve from Old Man Winter, Mother Nature’s snow guns and Arctic air will make a quick return Tuesday.

Current active weather alerts: Cold Weather Advisory for western Greenbrier and western Pocahontas for Tuesday into Wednesday.

Expected weather alerts to be issued by the weather service: Winter Weather Advisories for Pocahontas, western Greenbrier, eastern Nicholas and all of the Route 19 corridor. Cold Weather Advisory for eastern Fayette, eastern Raleigh and eastern Nicholas County for overnight Tuesday.

Looking Ahead: Temperatures will warm enough for rain to fall ahead of the next storm on Saturday. Rain amounts of 0.25-0.50″ are expected. Given the fact that we will see snow blocking storm drains and piles along the side of the road and in parking lots, expect standing water in many spots. Flood Watches will likely not be hoisted, but the ongoing snowpack combined with a bit of runoff will foster low-lying ponding of water. Colder temperatures and light snow is likely on Sunday.

LONGER TERM OUTLOOK: A major cold blast will push into the U.S. this weekend. The coldest weather locally will occur Tuesday into Wednesday, January 21-22 with widespread low temperatures between 0 and negative-20 degrees (coldest in this range will occur in western Greenbrier and western Pocahontas County) and highs ranging from below zero degrees in western Greenbrier and western Pocahontas to 9-15 degrees for the remainder of the region. We will see a dry, powdery snow Sunday afternoon into early Monday with 1-2 inches. Another light snow is expected January 19-20, January 23-24 and then perhaps January 25-26 before a sustainable warmer period begins to commence. None of the snow events are expected to produce snow accumulations exceeding 6″.
