Sheriff’s Deputies Get Laid Off

MCDOWELL COUNTY– Six local sheriff’s deputies are not looking forward to the end of this year.
Six deputies from the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office are scheduled to be laid off on December 31st. According to a press release, the lay offs are a result of budget problems. All six of the deputies are academy certified and have between 2 and 10 years of experience. Sheriff Martin West is inviting the community and lawmakers to show their support and make their concerns known at the last county commission meeting on December 14th. West says they have already been forced to get rid of their midnight hift and with these cuts they will be unable to have an evening and weekend shifts as well.
