Sheriff Mike Fridley Warning Fayette County Residents Of Phone Scam

FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Fayette County Sheriff’s Department is advising of another phone scam in the area.

Sheriff Mike Fridley advises that a phone scam has been reported in Fayette on several occasions.  The scammer calls from an unknown number and advises the victim that a relative has been arrested in another state.  The scammer then advises the victim to send money to help the relative get out of jail. The scammers often know the name of an actual relative, likely obtained from social media sites, so the victim may believe the call is legitimate.

Sheriff Fridley advises to not send money out under these circumstances,  or any similar situations.  If your loved one is in jail somewhere,  they will contact you directly, not through a third party.
