September marks National Suicide Prevention Month

WEST VIRGINIA (WOAY)- September marks the start of National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, and with suicide being the 2nd leading cause of death among 10 to 18 year olds, experts urge parents, teachers and trusted adults to start the conversation about mental health early.

Parents, teachers and adults can approach suicide prevention the same way you do other safety and health issues with your child, even if your child is not struggling with suicide or depression.

Having a serious discussion and checking in regularly can show your child that it’s okay, but also, important to reach out to friends or family member when he or she is feeling low.
