Senator Shelley Moore Capito takes on fraud and scams with CEASE Act

WASHINGTON D.C. (WOAY) – The Combating Egregious Advertising through Sentencing Enhancement (CEASE) Act aims to increase the Federal Trade Commissions fines and punishments for false advertising during the pandemic.

Senator Capito says that fraud has always been an issue in the state due to the high number of vulnerable populations, and the act will ideally help reduce fraud by increasing the penalties.

“Somebody says they’re gonna go to the unemployment office and help them and all they wanna do is steal their money. We know that senior fraud is an issue in general but it really heightens during something like a crisis like we have now, and so this really doubles the penalties on that,” Capito said.

The bill was also co-introduced by Senators Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.).
