ATHENS, OHIO (WCHS/WVAH) — The search and recovery effort has resumed on the Hocking River in Athens, Ohio for a kayaker who went missing Saturday afternoon.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Athens Fire Department and Wellston Fire Department are continuing to search for a Steve Lippson, 40, who went missing just after 2 p.m. Saturday when he was swept over the Whites Mill waterfall while kayaker on the Hocking River, according to a news release from the Athens County Emergency Management Agency.
Lippson is from Racine in Meigs, County.
Rescuers spent Saturday afternoon and evening searching for Lippson, but the search was suspended at 9:15 p.m. Crews returned to the area at 8 a.m. Sunday to continue the search.
The release said the Hocking River was swollen due to recent heavy rain in the region.
At about 2 p.m. Saturday six kayakers were swept over the water fall. Five of those were rescued by emergency responders or were able to rescue themselves.
