Recycling industry faces hard times

RALEIGH COUNTY (WOAY)- The recycling industry is facing hard times as costs soar and the market is up and down.

But the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority is saying recycling is here to stay.

It’s a situation that members of Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority leaders say is driven by international markets, specifically China’s decision to no longer accept mixed recyclables due to high contamination levels.

Officials hope the market will recover soon.

“Markets fluctuate all time,” director Lisa Suggs said. “This is lowest I’ve seen in about 15 years of working in recycling. They have been low before and they have been really high before, but are Board of Directors has been committed to keeping the recycling center going.”

Suggs says, despite the lows, the RCSWA will continue to collect recyclables.
