Beckley, WV (WOAY)—The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office is warning the public about a phone scam in which callers threaten arrest or other punishment for missing jury duty.
The office is receiving reports from residents, stating callers are claiming they have missed jury duty and must pay a fee to avoid arrest.
Callers attempt to boost credibility by spoofing official phone numbers, stealing badge numbers, and misrepresenting themselves as named police officers.
Residents who receive a call like this should not provide any information and hang up immediately.
Anyone who receives these calls should contact the sheriff’s office at (304) 255-9300 or stop by the office at 308 Ned Payne Drive in Beckley.
