Raleigh County receives grant to expand broadband service

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – Raleigh County receives a grant worth nearly $643,999 to go towards expanding broadband in the county.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant will help bring broadband internet to the industrial park by the Raleigh County Memorial Airport.

While the businesses already existing at the park have access to the internet, this allows the county to continue developing in the area to attract new businesses.

“ More businesses means more revenue and jobs,” said Raleigh County Commissioner Ron Hedrick. “We’re looking for future jobs in new industries so our kids can train for that type of stuff and go to school and stay here. That’s what we’re focusing on with this, [attracting] internet businesses and aerospace industries.”

In total, HUD gave the state about $13.8 million in grants for broadband, water and sewer upgrades.
