Raleigh County Man Charged With Child Abuse After 10-Month-Old Baby Suffers From Head Trauma

RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – A man is in jail for child neglect charges causing serious bodily injuries.

According to court documents, Police was called to Raleigh General Hospital in reference to a child abuse complaint back in July.  Medical staff told police that a ten-month-old was transported to the emergency room for seizure life symptoms.

Police were informed that the initial test results were consistent with shaken baby syndrome.

Police interviewed Joseph Fisher and he stated that he laid the ten-month-old down for a nap and nothing else happened.  Fisher went on to say that he noticed the baby making unusual movements with his hands and arms.

Fisher stated the day before, he fed the baby and began to bounce him on his knee trying to get him to burb, but couldn’t.

When police interviewed the mother she stated that she thought the baby was ok and he was just being rowdy.  According to the mother, she stated that Fisher yelled for her when the baby was four to six weeks old, ‘you’ve got to take the baby, I’m afraid I’m going to hurt him.  I’m too excited, I’ve just got to calm down.”

Throughout the month’s long investigation, a doctor with Child Abuse Pediatrician at Women and Children’s Hospital in Charleston told police that test results show the ten-month-old baby had an acute left-sided subdural hematoma.   The MRI showed a bleed that was greater than seven days old.  The doctor stated that the 10-month-old baby suffered from abusive head trauma.  When Police asked the doctor could this occur from Fisher bouncing the baby on his knee, the doctor said these injuries could only be caused by a violent shake.

Fisher is charged with child neglect causing serious bodily injuries.  He is being held in the Southern Regional Jail under a 100,000 dollar bond.
