Postseason Basketball Tournaments Remain on Hold

WOAY – There has been no official decision made yet as to the continuation of the high school basketball postseason for 2019-20.

WVSSAC Executive Bernie Dolan reportedly told media outlets Friday night that a decision could be sometime next week on whether to continue the girls’ state tournament and boys’ regional games. Nine area teams are still in the running to win a state championship. PikeView’s and Woodrow Wilson’s girls teams have both advanced to the semifinals, while Greenbrier East and Summers County are yet to play their quarterfinal games. Greater Beckley boys have qualified for the Class A state tournament, while the regional matchups of Independence-Bluefield & Shady Spring-Westside have not yet been played.

All extracurricular school activities in West Virginia have been suspended until April 10.

WOAY Sports will continue to keep you updated on local sports coverage; we will have a Gino’s Top Plays segment on Sunday, March 15, and a Sheets Auto Group Athlete of the Week recap of the winter sports season on Tuesday, March 17.

We will also be continuing the WOAY Girls and Boys Basketball Player of the Year Awards, along with naming a 15-member All-WOAY Girls Basketball and Boys Basketball Team at the end of the season.
