Police say man detained after stealing ambulance, fleeing from officers

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) By: Anna Taylor – A man has been detained and will face a grand larceny auto charge after police said he stole an ambulance and fled from officers.

Barry DeWayne Massey, 51 of Seth stole a Kanawha County ambulance about 7 a.m. in Charleston, Wednesday, police said.

There were no ambulance personnel or patients inside the vehicle when it was stolen, Metro 911 said.

The pursuit ended on Mill Creek Road near Campbells Creek about 7:40 a.m.

Massey currently is at a local hospital. The extent of his condition is unavailable.

The Charleston Police Department and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office responded.
