UPDATED: Suspect named in Oak Hill murder in custody

OAK HILL, WV (NEWS RELEASE) — The suspect in the murder of Janet Garrett in Oak Hill has been arrested. Sheriff Mike Fridley and Fayette County Prosecuting Attorney Larry Harrah released the following information concerning this arrest:

During the early morning hours of Sunday, April 16, 2017 Deputies responded to a report of a shooting incident just outside of the corporate limits of Oak Hill. Janet Garrett, age 48, of Oak Hill was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of death was a single gunshot wound. Witnesses and evidence at the scene indicated that at least two suspects were involved in this incident.

After receiving numerous tips from the public, investigators were able to identify a suspect and obtain a warrant for his arrest. Deputies and officers from the Oak Hill Police Department and the Central West Virginia Drug Task Force worked throughout the evening Monday and into the early morning hours of Tuesday in an effort to locate this suspect. Shortly before noon on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 the suspect surrendered to Officer M.D. Grose of the Oak Hill Police Department.

Derrick Michael Crouse, age 19, was arrested and charged with murder. He was arraigned in the Fayette County Magistrate Court and remanded to the Southern Regional Jail.

“This arrest was a direct result of information that we received from the public through Crime Stoppers of West Virginia, our department Facebook page and information called into us,” said Sheriff Fridley. “The assistance provided to us by the public in this case was invaluable in solving this case, and we greatly appreciate the support of our citizens,” added Prosecuting Attorney Larry Harrah.

Investigators are still working to identify the second suspect involved in this crime. This case remains under investigation by the Detective Bureau of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office.
