One Dies in Mercer County House Fire

MATOAKA– Investigators with the State Fire Marshal and the State Medical Examiner’s Office were dispatched Monday to Old Giatto Road near Matoaka after a man was found dead inside his burned home.

According to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Detective S.A. Sommers, with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department, said near the scene that the victim’s son went to the home, discovered what had happened and then went to the Lashmeet Grocery where he called Mercer County 911.

Members of the man’s family identified him as Joe Cook, 74. His niece, Julie Perdue of Bluewell, said he had lived at the two-story brick home all of his life. She said he was a Vietnam veteran.

Neither the family or members of the media were allowed to drive up to the fire scene because a large number of vehicles were parked there. The Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department and the Princeton Rescue Squad were also dispatched to the scene.

Sommers said the fire marshal would be conducting an investigation.
