FAYETTE COUNTY (WOAY) — A Fayette County man has died Thursday evening in a motor vehicle accident in Powellton.
Sheriff Mike Fridley tells WOAY that at about 2:30 pm Thursday, notification was received by the Fayette County 911 Center of two motor vehicle accidents in close proximity of each other on Armstrong Creek Road in Powellton. Deputies arriving on scene discovered that both accidents were actually the same extended crash scene.
Deputies found that two vehicles were involved, a small passenger car and a coal truck. The car was traveling west on Armstrong Creek Road at which point it crossed the centerline, striking the oncoming coal truck. After the initial impact, the coal truck struck the corners of two unoccupied structures (both garage/storage) and a parked pickup truck before coming to a stop.
The driver of the passenger car, Mark L. Munsey, 61 of Kimberly, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the coal truck was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center for treatment, and is said to be in stable condition.
Armstrong Creek Road was shut down intermittently for several hours while crews worked to investigate and secure the vehicles. No other persons were involved in or otherwise injured in this accident.
This incident remains under investigation by Captain L.A. Crisp and Corporal R.D. Stephens of the Fayette County Sheriffs Department.
