BECKLEY, WV (WOAY)— While the hustle and bustle of Christmas is around us, people were able to take a break and relieve some pressure earlier today at the Wildwood House in Beckley.
The Wildwood House “Old Fashioned” Christmas event hosted by the Raleigh County Historical Society welcomed many guests. Visitors were treated to tours of the house and visions of the Christmas spectaculars that took place in the 1800’s.
Christmas carolers rang in the holiday spirit as visitors approached the front steps of the house.
Cindy Worley, Vice President of the Raleigh Historical Society explained the Wildwood House and the Christmas event, “To have an event at a home of our city’s founder at its original location. At Christmas time in the 1860s, it was a much simpler life. It revolved around family, church and gatherings. They sang carols. They gathered around the piano. The toys were simple. There was no rushing. There was no what is this on Amazon. You enjoyed Christmas and you got to breathe at the same time. So that’s what we try to portray here at Christmas.”
A new feature to the event that many enjoyed was a vintage toy collection and a winter camp set up that displayed World War II history. This event was a nostalgic way for families to witness how Christmas was in the 1800s.
