Obecny leads after WV Open second round

DANIELS, WV (WOAY) – Thaddeus Obecny II is the 36-hole leader of the 2020 West Virginia Open, taking a three-shot lead into the final round at the Resort at Glade Springs.

The Wheeling native is the only golfer to post subpar rounds both Tuesday and Wednesday, recording a two-under 70 in the second round to complement his opening-round 71. Wednesday’s round included an eagle on the par-5 12th hole.

Obecny was one of multiple players to have the solo lead Wednesday; 18-hole leader Kenneth Hess would post 75 to move back to even par. Christian Brand, who started on the back nine, was bogey-free until his 12th hole of the day, followed by a 9 on the par-4 4th hole; he is tied for seventh at +2. Four-time defending champion David Bradshaw shot 73 and is seven strokes behind Obecny at +4.

Among area golfers, Shady Spring’s Landon Perry is tied for seventh after an even round of 72 keeps him at +2 overall. Daniels’ Todd Duncan, who won the WV Junior Match Play last week, is tied for 21st at +5.

64 golfers made the cut (+12) to play in the final round Thursday, including eight southern West Virginia natives. Also qualifying is Concord University senior Noah Clark, a native of Pearisburg, Virginia.

Tee times for Thursday’s final round begin at 7:45 AM on the Cobb course’s first tee. Obecny, Hess, and reigning WV Amateur champion Mason Williams will be in the final group at 11:10 AM.
