Oak Hill Woman Arrested For Stealing Money From An Elderly Person

OAK HILL (WOAY) – A Fayette County woman is in jail today for allegedly stealing money from an elderly person.

Lela Virginia Rhodes, 37, of Oak Hill was arrested today on numerous felony counts following an investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department. The Detective Bureau received information that Rhodes had possibly stolen checks from a 92 year old man after she worked for him. Rhodes allegedly forged the victim’s signature to the checks and received nearly $11,000.00 in doing so.

Rhodes was charged with 32 felony counts of Forgery/Uttering, and 1 felony count of Financial Exploitation of the Elderly. She was unable to post the $20,000.00 bond set by the Fayette County Magistrate’s Office and was remanded to the Southern Regional Jail.

“Elderly persons are often seen as easy targets”, says Sheriff Fridley. “In many cases like these, there are people keeping vigilance over their affairs and well being, which enables us to bring justice on their behalf”.
