New Roane Sheriff Appointed After Previous Sheriff Resigned

SPENCER–  The Roane County Commission has appointed Interim Sheriff Todd Cole to serve as sheriff for two more years.

Media outlets report Cole filled a vacancy created when newly elected Sheriff Matthew “Bo” Williams resigned Jan. 18 as part of a plea agreement related to the theft of methamphetamine from the Spencer Police Department evidence room.

Commissioners appointed Cole interim sheriff on Jan. 20. Cole has been with the sheriff’s department for 27 years. He served two terms as sheriff, from 2001-2009, then returned to the job in 2014 after the retirement of Sheriff Mike Harper.

Cole says he hopes to retire once his current term is finished.

Williams is set to be sentenced March 28, and faces one to 10 years in prison.
