Oak Hill, WV (WOAY)- The National Park Service has announced a significant decision for New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
Following a thorough environmental assessment, the NPS has released a Finding of No Significant Impact, or FONSI, for the proposed demolition of several deteriorating historic structures.
After considering three alternatives and gathering public feedback, the park has chosen a modified version of Alternative C, which retains key buildings with high potential for reuse.
That includes the Dun Glen Ark, the Marilyn Brown House, and the historic Thurmond Ice House.
Thanks to public input, three more structures may now be considered for leasing if viable proposals are submitted.
The acting regional director signed the decision on July 18, clearing the way for action with funding provided through the Great American Outdoors Act.
The Great American Outdoors Act is a nationwide initiative aimed at addressing the substantial maintenance backlog in U.S. national parks.
