New River CTC distributes emergency grants to students

BEAVER, WV (WOAY) – New River Community and Technical College has begun distributing over $344,000 in CARES Act funds to students enrolled at the college during the spring 2020 semester.

“More than 600 of our students are receiving emergency grants from the college. These funds are intended to help our students who had to move from attending classes on campus to online,” New River CTC President Dr. Bonny Copenhaver announced. “We’ve been reaching out to all of our students over the past few weeks about the grants and the eligibility requirements to ensure that everyone who was eligible would be receiving the funding.”

Emergency grant funds from the CARES Act are being distributed to eligible students enrolled in spring 2020 classes as of March 27, 2020. The amount received was set on a pro-rated basis based on the number of credit hours students attempted at a college location. Eligibility was determined based on the guidelines established by the Department of Education.

New River CTC’s allocation from the CARE Act is $688,982.

New River CTC moved spring 2020 classes online on March 30, 2020, as a precautionary measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The college will offer all summer 2020 courses online and will waive distance learning fees for all summer courses.

New River Community and Technical College serves nine counties in southeastern West Virginia from the Greenbrier Valley Campus (Lewisburg), Mercer County Campus (Princeton), Nicholas County Campus (Summersville) and Raleigh County Campus (Beaver).
