Mountaineers Upset Baylor to Close Regular Season

WOAY – West Virginia men’s basketball closed the regular season Saturday with a 76-64 upset of #4 Baylor in Morgantown.

On Senior Day for three Mountaineers, it was sophomore Emmitt Matthews leading the way with 18 points off the bench for the hosts. Oscar Tshiebwe recorded another double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and Miles McBride chipped in with 12. West Virginia will be the #6 seed in the Big 12 Tournament, and will face Oklahoma Thursday night in the quarterfinals.

It was Senior Day for WVU women’s basketball as well, but the Mountaineer women would struggle against TCU, falling 77-63. Tynice Martin scored 17 points in her final regular season home game, while Kari Niblack added 15. There are still several Big 12 games to be played on Sunday, so West Virginia will learn its conference tournament seed that night.

Concord women’s basketball also came up short Saturday, with a 70-68 loss to Glenville State in the Mountain East tournament semifinals. Madison May and Riley Fitzwater each had 21 points for the Lady Lions; May, a PikeView graduate, is the second-leading scorer in program history.
