FRIDAY UPDATE: Illinois man likely drowned in New River Thursday

Crews are searching for a swimmer who went missing on the New River around 4:50 p.m. Thursday.

According to the National Park Service, the swimmer has been identified as Abdulrahman Binomran, 28, from Oak Park, Illinois, who is believed to have drowned while swimming Thursday in the Fayette Station rapids area of the New River.

At approximately 4:50 p.m. Thursday, Binomran was swimming with three friends in the pool above Fayette Station rapids when they decided to swim through the rapids, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

Emergency responders were out searching for a missing swimmer on the New River Gorge on Thursday evening. A swimmer went missing at around 4:50 p.m.

According to the National Park Service, he was said to be swimming in the pool above the Fayette Station Rapids, and emergency responders were called after he did not reappear from the rapids.

Search crews were looking for him until night fall on Thursday night, and will resume the search on Friday morning with the help of the Beaver Volunteer Fire Department Dive Team.
