Millions start hitting for Thanksgiving getaway in busiest travel day of the year

BECKLEY (WOAY)- It’s crunch time for Thanksgiving travelers. Triple A says 50 million people are hitting the roads- that’s the most in 13 years. Wednesday, millions are still on there way before the big day. Some even making pit stops here at home.

“We’re heading to the Cleveland/Akron area,” Mike Dunn from Richmond, VA said.

“We left from Florence, South Carolina and going to New Castle, Pennsylvania,” John Riley said.

“i’m going to North Carolina and we left from Detroit,” Mercelle Maxwell.

Drivers are hoping bumper to bumper traffic-in some places backed up as far as you can can see. It’s probably going to be a long ride.

“There’s been a lot of traffic,” Riley said. “Police are out too, so we’re going the speed limit.”

Gas prices are down- that means more cars on the road and as people get back in the car to continue their trek to the turkey. Some say stay calm as you inch your way to dinner.

“Keep your cool,” Dunn said.
