Mercer County Schools Announce Make Up Days

PRINCETON, WV (WOAY) – Mercer County Schools is excited that HB 4145 was unanimously approved by both houses of the West Virginia Legislature. The passage of this bill allows us to resume our school year while continuing to provide instructional time that results in a quality educational experience. As a school system, teaching students is our first priority.

In our desire to achieve this goal, it is appropriate that we review and revise our school calendar for the remainder of this year. In doing so, we are converting the Spring Break days of April 4, 5, and 6, 2018 to instructional days. Additionally, April 2 and 3, 2018, will be days out of school for students. Employees will participate in professional development activities on April 2 and 3, 2018. By scheduling these make-up days during the Spring Break week, we can better prepare our students for various types of state testing, for Advanced Placement exams administered in early May, and for meeting hourly requirements for students in certification and completer programs at the Technical Education Center.

Mercer County Public Schools chose to convert Spring Break days instead of adding days to the end of the calendar because we believe they allow a greater opportunity to positively impact student achievement. In doing so, we understand the need to acknowledge and respect the fact that some families may have plans during the week of April 2 – 6, 2018, which cannot be canceled or rescheduled. In these instances, we ask parent(s) / guardian(s) to provide a letter to your child’s principal explaining your plans and circumstances. The resulting student absences will be identified as excused. For secondary students required to take exams, excused absences during April 4 – 6, 2018, will be waived and will not count toward Mercer County Schools’ exam exemption policy requirements.

As we move forward, teachers will continually seek ways to enrich and enhance students’ educational experiences. If we do not have any additional inclement weather-related closures, the last day of school for all students will be June 5, 2018, and the last day for employees will be June 6, 2018. These dates are the previously established 2017-2018 end of school dates. As announced earlier, the graduation date of May 25, 2018, will not be impacted.
