MERCER COUNTY, WV (WOAY)—Mercer County Emergency Management says the county was blessed not to have as severe damage as McDowell. However, sporadic flooding across the county, especially in the western parts.
The damage was widespread around the Matoaka, Montcalm, Kellysville, and Oakvale areas. According to the director, he said that the weather service recorded over the 20-foot heights of water in the Blue Stone River in Spanishburg. One of the highest, if not the highest, recorded in that area of the river.
Mercer County Emergency Management received National Guard personnel, CAT teams, and assessment teams as of Monday. With that, the county commission has placed three dumpsters in locations across the county for debris disposal.

“One is located in Montcalm Fire Department off Route 71 in the Montcalm area,” explained Keith Gunnoe, director of Mercer County Emergency Management. “There’s one down just below the Oakvale Fire Department at the entrance to Pigeon Creek and there’s one on Route 10, which is between the Spanishburg and Matoaka near C&J Grocery to help those the residents in the Montcalm-Spanishburg area.”
