McDowell County Deputies Will Not Be Laid Off

WELCH– Funding was shifted Tuesday from a county ambulance authority in hopes of helping the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department retain six deputies that were scheduled to be laid off Dec. 31.

According to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, Sheriff Martin West addressed the McDowell County Commission during a special meeting focused on his department’s funding situation due to budget cuts. West reminded the commissioners that if he lost six deputies, the department would lose its night shift and could be seriously hampered if it had to answer emergency calls during the day.

The commissioners voted to shift, from January to July 2017, $21,000 a month that would have gone to the McDowell County Ambulance Authority to the sheriff’s department.
