Senator Joe Manchin visited the U.S. Postal Service processing and distribution center in Charleston today as the facility undergoes a review by the Postal Service.
Pending the results of the review, it could be moved out of state. However, Manchin said that it is unlikely, based on his conversations with the postmaster general.
“After this visit, what is clear is the quality, work ethic and dedication of the employees and management of the facility. They truly exemplify that West Virginians are the best workers in the country,” Manchin said. “Postmaster General DeJoy has assured me this facility will not have one single employee laid off, and I will instead work with him to deliver major investments to its operations to improve services for West Virginians. There is absolutely no reason to move our West Virginia mail processing facility to another state and I am committed to making sure this does not become a reality.”
Senator Shelley Moore Capito has also come out in support of the office, issuing a statement in support of the location.
“While I understand the need for the United States Postal Service (USPS) to review its operations and to improve upon them, I believe that this facility is essential not only for all 800 employees at the center, but also for the West Virginians that depend on it for all their postal needs,” Senator Capito wrote. “USPS should be transparent and forthright as the review is conducted. Confusion and lack of information should not have a place in this process.”
Capito has also met with the postmaster general and followed up on the conversation.
The facility provides jobs for 800 people in Kanawha County.
