Leadership Beckley sows seeds for first community garden

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Leadership Beckley Class of 2023 has planted the first seeds for its community garden.

The garden is located at the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority behind the recycling center.

Five hundred and twenty pumpkin, watermelon, and cantaloupe seeds were planted in the garden. The produce will be distributed to seniors and low-income communities.

The seeds from the garden were donated by the Beckley Chick-fil-A.

The garden is intended to help families who can’t access or afford other pumpkin patches and will directly impact students.

“The biggest initiative that will come out of this is the pumpkins. The goal is to provide each Stanaford elementary student with a pumpkin come fall,” Alyce Almond, chair of Leadership Beckley, said. “This is year one. But next year, hopefully, we can add produce or expand in what we grow so we can maybe add more schools or different community groups or organizations so that more youth can benefit.”
