June is Men’s Health Month

OAK HILL, WV (WOAY) – In honor of Men’s Health Awareness Month, a local doctor weighs in on what to keep an eye out for when it comes to your health.

Heart disease is a major concern, as it’s the number one killer for both men and women. Dr. Paul Conley says you should watch your blood pressure and cholesterol to make sure you have a healthy heart, but that isn’t the only organ to keep an eye on. You may need to start getting regular prostate checks as well.

“In men, it’s the number three cancer killer falling after lung and colon cancer,” said Conley. “We know that in this country, about one in nine men will develop prostate cancer. The good news is only about one in 40 will actually die from that disease. Most men will die from other causes”

Men should start considering a prostate check at 50 years old, or at 45 for those at a higher risk.
