Inmate Stabs, Throws Feces At Officer in Raleigh County

An inmate at the Southern Regional Jail in Raleigh County is accused of throwing a bottle of human feces and then stabbing a correctional officer repeatedly with a homemade plastic shank.

Jonathan Jackson, 25, is charged with malicious wounding after the incident that occurred Tuesday, according to a criminal complaint filed in Raleigh County Magistrate Court.

State Police said Jackson left his cell and walked to the upper level of the A-Pod and then walked back downstairs near the correctional officer, identified as Austin Cunningham. The complaint said Jackson threw a bottle of human feces at the tower area, causing the bottle to explode on the glass. He then immediately ran toward the correctional officer and began to stab him repeatedly with a homemade plastic shank, the complaint said.

Jackson was then subdued and restrained by the jail staff, the complaint said. The correctional officer’s injuries appeared to be life threatening at this time.

Lawrence Messina, communications director for the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, said Cabinet Secretary Jeff Sandy and David Farmer have each contacted the Cunningham, the correctional officer personally as he recovers. Farmer also traveled to the Southern Regional Jail on Wednesday to check on conditions there.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice recently declared a state of emergency due to the staffing levels of the state’s juvenile and adult detention and correctional facilities giving state officials the authority to call up the National Guard to help with the crisis.

Meanwhile, Jackson is currently being held at the Central Regional Jail in Braxton County. His bond has been set at $100,000 surety/cash on the malicious wounding charge. He also is being held on two charges out of Wyoming County.
