How To Prevent Your Christmas Tree From Catching On Fire

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The Beckley Fire Department is offering tips to keep your Christmas tree hydrated.

All of the people are getting for ready for Christmas time in the city. Some have already put their Christmas trees up and decorated them. There are some things Newswatch would like you to be aware of to prevent those beautiful Christmas trees from catching on fire. Whether it is a real or artificial tree make sure you keep the tree away from heat sources, check the tree lights and turn them off and do not leave them on overnight.

“If you are using your real tree you want to make sure that it stays well hydrated.  Keep it watered because as the tree drys out; it is more susceptible to catching fire.  You want to make sure you have a good set of lights that are UL listed that the cords aren’t damaged or frayed. If you do have to use an extension cord make sure that extension cord is in good condition as well,” said Chris Lanna, Beckley Fire Department

Always make sure that there is a smoke alarm in the home with fresh batteries and that it is working correctly.
