Harlem Globetrotters Coming to Beckley

BECKLEY–  In 1926 the Harlem Globetrotters played their very first game. since then, the globetrotters have entertained more than 144 million fans in 122 countries and territories worldwide. Zeus McClurkin hadn’t heard of the globetrotters until he played against them as a member of the Washington Generals.

“That was when I got my introduction to the globetrotter. I saw who they were lined up with my core values. Ever since I saw them play it was love at first sight, I wanted to be a Harlem Globetrotter. Eventually they got tired of me dunkin on them and signed me to a contract.”

Zeus plays as number 30 on the team as a forward. he says his favorite part of this job is walking around the cities he travels to and being recognized.

“People recognize the red white blue shirt I have on and it takes them back to a happier time in their life when they went to a game with their parents or their grandparents. Even though they don’t don’t me, they welcome me into their hearts and I think that’s the coolest part. The globetrotter brand is so world wide and well known that people recognize it every where we go. They have been to 122 countries around the world. I represent that 91 year history every time I put on the red white and blue.”

The Globetrotters have set countless world record for their crazy tricks, but Zeus believes that it is something anyone can do.

“We have training camp every year and it’s about two weeks of rigorous training learning new dunks and new tricks. Anything you put time and effort into you will become persistent at it.”

If you are planning to head out and see the globetrotters next week in Beckley, you can expect to see a new trick created by the team.

“This year we are introducing something new to the game of basketball we are known as innovators in the game. We invented the slam dunk, the three point shot, three man weave and this year we are hoping other leagues will pick up on the for point shot. It is 30 ft from the basket and 6 ft beyond the three point line. If you look at the NBA people are already shooting from that distance anyway so it’s time they start getting credit for it.”

The Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Beckley Raleigh Convention Center on March 21st at 7 pm. So go online to Harlemglobetrotters.com and buy your tickets now because this basketball artistry is all doable on a tank of gas.
