Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department Warning Residents Of A New Scam

GREENBRIER COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Department is warning residents of a new scam in the area.

The Greenbrier County Sheriff’s Office wants to warn the public of a scam being perpetrated by individuals identifying themselves as employees of the Dish Network. The telephone caller advises that satellite frequency changes are necessitating an upgrade to the customer’s satellite box. The customer is informed that the software upgrade, which will be accomplished over the telephone, is free however there is a one- time fee associated with the upgrade. The culprits are reportedly very knowledgeable regarding the operation of the system.

A representative of the Dish Network informed the Sheriff’s Office they do not perform upgrades via the telephone and these callers are not associated with their company.

The public is cautioned to be aware of this fraudulent activity and to report any calls they may receive to law enforcement at 304-647-6634.
