Governor Patrick Morrisey announces New Purple Alert Program

West Virginia (WOAY)- Governor Patrick Morrisey announced the launch of West Virginia’s new Purple Alert system.

The system is a vital tool designed to help locate individuals with cognitive impairments who are missing.

Purple Alert launched through the Department of Homeland Security and State Police, is now active statewide.

Governor Morrisey emphasized that Purple Alerts empower law enforcement to act swiftly when vulnerable individuals go missing, strengthening community safety through fast coordination.

Doug Buffington, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, described the initiative as “a critical step” in protecting some of the state’s most vulnerable citizens, urging the public and media to actively share these alerts.

A Purple Alert is issued when someone with a cognitive impairment is reported missing, believed to be in danger, and unable to return home.

Alerts will be sent via press releases, social media, and media outlets.

The Purple Alert Program joins existing systems like Amber Alerts to ensure broader public safety.
