West Virginia (WOAY)- Governor Patrick Morrisey announced West Virginia is sending another $2.5 million to support food banks and pantries, bringing the total to $8.6 million in emergency food aid during the federal shutdown.
Nearly 270,000 West Virginians are expected to miss new SNAP benefits this month.
The West Virginia National Guard is also stepping in to help, with troops assisting local food banks by sorting, packaging, and distributing food across the state.
Major General Jim Seward says, “Point us at a task, no matter how small or difficult, and our Soldiers and Airmen can get it done.”
Governor Morrisey is encouraging residents and businesses to donate directly to Facing Hunger and Mountaineer Food Bank.
Residents can also call 211 for local assistance.
