Gauley rafting season water releases set in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, WV. (AP) — A rainy summer means there will be plenty of water for the fall rafting season on West Virginia’s Gauley River.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will begin lowering Summersville Lake to its winter level through releases at the Summersville Dam starting Sept. 7. The weekly releases will continue through Oct. 21.

Adventures on the Gorge managing partner Dave Arnold tells the Charleston Gazette-Mail the amount of water released will be plentiful, enough that rafts will bump into fewer submerged rocks.

In addition to Gauley rafting season, the U.S. Rafting Association’s national whitewater championships will be held Sept. 4 and 5 on the New River and Sept. 6, 7 and 8 on the Gauley River.
