Former Southern Regional Jail corrections officer sentenced in connection with inmate death

Beaver, WV (WOAY)- A former corrections officer at the Southern Regional Jail (SRJ) has been sentenced in connection with the death of an inmate.

25-year-old Steven Nicholas Wimmer of Bluefield will serve nine years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, for his role in the 2022 assault and death of Quantez Burks.

Wimmer admitted to taking part in a violent incident that occurred after Burks reportedly tried to push past another officer.

Though Burks was quickly restrained and handcuffed, Wimmer and others took him to an interview room, where officers beat him.

Wimmer plead guilty last November to conspiracy to use unreasonable force, along with another former officer, Andrew Fleshman.

Fleshman will face sentencing in July.

Six more former officers are also facing charges.

Mark Holdren, Corey Snyder, and Johnathan Walters have plead guilty, and face sentencing on June 16.

Two others, Ashley Toney and Jacob Boothe, admitted to failing to stop the violence.

Toney and Boothe’s hearing will take place on June 9.

On January 27, a federal jury convicted Chad Lester, a former lieutenant at the jail, of obstruction of justice for helping cover up the incident.

His sentencing will take place on May 15.
