FEMA advises residents impacted winter floods to obtain necessary permits before conducting repairs in flood zone

West Virginia (WOAY)- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) advises residents in declared disaster areas following the Valentine’s Day weekend floods to contact their local building officials to get the necessary permits before considering repairs or new construction.

Building permits are crucial for homes and businesses located within the 100-year floodplain.

Floodplain development permits cannot be waived.

Additionally, local governments cannot reduce or ignore the floodplain requirement.

Permits are necessary for removing or replacing roofs, walls, siding, wallboard, plaster, insulation, paneling, cabinets, flooring, electrical systems, plumbing, heating systems, and air conditioning systems.
