Fayette County Sheriff’s Department Is Warning Of Bank Skimmers In Our Area

FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY) – The Fayette County Sheriffs Department is investigating individuals for potential fraud conducted in our region.

On Thursday Sheriff’s Deputies investigated an incident in Ames Heights regarding two individuals from Florida who were in the area, possibly using credit card scanning devices “skimmers” to obtain bank account information. These individuals had the scanning equipment, computers and blank cards to transfer the bank information to. It is unknown at this point as to if they have had a chance to use the skimmers prior to being contacted by the deputies. The U.S. Secret Service will be assisting the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, in determining if these individuals were able to steal personal information from anyone.

Sheriff Fridley urges all gas stations, convenience stores with ATMs and retail stores to constantly check their machines that accept credit/debit cards to see if there are skimmers installed. The devices themselves look like credit card swipe devices, but not exactly like the ones factory installed in the machine. They are commonly installed on gas pumps, ATMs and movie rental kiosks. If it looks suspicious, don’t use it!
