Families Unveil Memorials for Those Lost in 2007 Ghent Explosion

GHENT– More than 11 years after an explosion killed multiple men in Ghent, their families gathered to remember them.

New memorial markers were unveiled at the site of the explosion. Those left behind say this is something they have been waiting for.

Nancy Bennett lost her son, Glenn, and isn’t sure if she will be able to return. “If we can’t make it anymore, we have made it through this, which we have been waiting for. We may not make the trip from Florida anymore. We are 80 so that’s getting older.”

But whether they are able to return to this new memorial or not, that day is one they will always carry with them.

Hazel Burroughs remembers learning she lost her husband, Fred, vividly. “My brother in law talked to me on the phone and he told me Fred was here. I said how bad is he hurt and he told me the worst. So at that point I knew but I thought it couldn’t be because I thought I would’ve known in my heart in something bad like that had happened to him. But time has gone one. We didn’t think that it would but time has gone on for all the families. Births, weddings, graduations deaths it’s all happened in the 11 years they have been gone. Life went on. ”

Bennett said, “I keep tears in my eyes because I am never ever going to forget or get over it. I keep his picture but I’ll never get over it.”

But family members are trying to remain positive and see that some good came from their tragedy.

“I think they have learned a lot about safety as a result of what happened here,” Burroughs said. “People’s lives have been saved because of regulations and safety implementations that have occurred and been required because of this explosion.”
