EPA likely to recommend Minden to Superfund list

CHARLESTON, WV (WOAY) — Governor Jim Justice says the Environmental Protection Agency is expected to recommend that the former Shaffer Equipment site in Minden be added to the Superfund sites list.

The EPA tested the soil and water in June and found traces of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB’s.)  It also did cleanup work there in 2002 for the chemical.

“The EPA has been in control of this site for more than 25 years and the ball is still in their court,” Justice said in a statement. “But representatives of our Department of Environmental Protection have been actively involved with the EPA for the last six months to get answers because the health and safety of West Virginians is a priority for me.”

Justice says he’ll endorse a final EPA report on the site, which could be released within the month.
