UPDATE: Emergency Officials Find Man Who Drowned In New River In Fayette County

UPDATE (6/25/18 8:30 a.m.) – A Fayette County man has been found after he drowned trying to save a young child in the New River. The young girl did make it out safe.

Emergency officials tell WOAY that they found the man around 7:45 am Monday morning.  State medical examiners officer is on scene of the New River.   Family members confirmed to WOAY that the body was of the man.

The man didn’t have a life jacket on and was swept away by a current.

They advised people not to swim near the New River right under the Bridge because of the strong currents and to always wear a life jacket.

The name has not been released at this time.

Update: (6/24/18 10:00 p.m.) On scene officials told WOAY, an infant was swept away by the current when a male subject jumped in to save her, after rescuing her he was swept away. The search for the missing person will continue on Monday morning.


FAYETTE COUNTY, WV (WOAY)- Emergency officials are currently in process of a rope rescue near the New River Gorge.

According to Fayette County Dispatchers, they received the call around 7:30 p.m., for a rope rescue at Fayette Station.

Park Rangers, Fayetteville Fire Department, Nuttall Fire Department, Jan Care, and the Dept. of Natural Resources all responded to the scene.
