Deputy: Drunk man gave wheel to unlicensed teen who crashed

ATHENS, W.Va. (AP) — A sheriff’s deputy in West Virginia says a drunk driver gave the wheel to an unlicensed teen who then crashed into another car and injured five people.

The Bluefield Telegraph reports Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy D. Callaway says the crash happened Sunday night when the teen swerved across the center line of a road and hit another car head-on. Three juveniles and two adults were injured and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities haven’t released their identities.

Callaway says the adult driver let the teen drive despite the teen being unlicensed and having no driving experience. It’s unclear how the driver and teen are connected. He says possible charges are pending.
