Dangerous toys to avoid buying this holiday season

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The holiday season is upon us, which means your kids are probably putting together long lists for Christmas.

The World Against Toys Causing Harm, or W.A.T.C.H., is a non-profit organization that aims to educate the public about products that could be dangerous to your children.

They have put together a list of the top 10 most dangerous toys you can buy for your kids in 2018.

Check out the list below (which is in no particular order) to make sure you buy products that are safe for your children:
1. Nickelodeon Nella Princess Knight Pillow Pets Sleeptime Lites: This pillow is designed to emit colorful night-sky images around the room. It’s marketed for baby’s rooms, but the package states it should not be used in a crib, as well as identifies a “Battery Acid Leakage” hazard. These pillows also pose a choking hazard with small accessories that can be removed.

2. Nerf Vortex VTX Praxis Blaster: This toy gun features a launch force of small discs which could cause significant eye or facial injuries.

3. Marvel Black Panther Slash Claw: The toy features rigid black claws which could cause significant injury to eye or faces. The packaging does warn against hitting or swinging at others with the toy.

4. Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel Superstar Blade: This is a spring-loaded plastic blade marketed to ages 4 and up. The blade poses a blunt force and eye injury hazard.

5. Cabbage Patch Kids Dance Time Doll: The dolls are sold with a removable headband which could pose a choking hazard.

6. Zoo Jamz Xylophone: The caterpillar themed instrument is sold for babies, but includes a 9-inch long drumstick handle that could potentially be mouthed and block the child’s airway.

7. Nici Wonderland Doll: Miniclara the Ballerina: This doll is also marketed for babies, but the “little kitten” can become unattached and pose a choking hazard.

8. Stomp Rocket Ultra Rocket: This rocket is launched up to 200 feet in the air, meaning there is significant force behind the toy. The packaging does warn to direct the rocket away from yourself and others, but it could cause significant eye and facial injuries.

9. Cutting Fruit: This features magnetic fruit with a plastic “cutting” knife. The knife is sharp enough to potentially cause blunt trauma injuries.

10. Chien Á Promener Pull Along Dog: This pull along dog features a string 19 inches in length. This is above the industry standard of 12 inches, and packaging features no warning.

These are not the only potentially hazard toys on the market, but W.A.T.C.H. has listed these in their top 10 list.

The organization also suggests to shop defensively, meaning to watch out for hazards that might not be listed on the box or packaging. There is currently no fool-proof safety net to keep dangerous toys off the market, so it’s important to shop safe, and shop smart.
