City of Beckley to keep public pools closed for foreseeable future

BECKLEY, WV (WOAY) – The City of Beckley recently made the decision to not reopen its public pools.

Normally the pools would open on Memorial Day Weekend and stay open throughout the summer, but they decided to keep them closed based on the recommendations of the CDC.

Leslie Baker, director of Beckley Parks and Recreation, says staying healthy during a pandemic while at a public pool is not an easy task.

“They want you to maintain social distancing, they say masks if possible, but masks are not really good then if they become wet or damp. So that’s kind of an issue, how do you stay dry at a pool? And then social distancing with a lot of children is very difficult,” Baker said.

The pools will likely remain closed throughout the rest of the year.
